After the 2016 crop year, David and Barbara decided that it was time to slow down and re-group. In the fall of 2016, Hurricane Matthew caused catastrophic damages to eastern North Carolina, and Godwin Produce Company's sweet potato crop sustained losses exceeding 75% (see pictures below). Commodity prices were falling nationwide, and sweet potato prices were also at extremely low levels. Major changes were inevitable, so the decision was made to quit growing our own sweet potatoes and to drastically decrease the size of the farming operation.
Now, with long-time employee, Greg Tart, Godwin Produce Company, Inc. has partnered with Steven Ceccarelli of Farm Fresh Produce in Faison, North Carolina to become a secondary storage and packing operation for his firm. David and Greg manage and maintain the company's facilities, and Steven and his team bring sweet potatoes in from his operation to cure, store, and pack for his customers. David and Greg farm limited acres while coordinating with Steven for the successful movement of his crop.
